FORUM News Release:

AHS FORUM UPDATED

In order to stop bogus registrations to the AHS FORUM all registrations will be approved by ADMIN after submission. The FORUM is no longer restricted by username and password protection however GUESTS will only be permitted to browse the site.

All members who were previously members of the FORUM will have to RE-REGISTER and you can do so with your old username and password.

At the last EAR Meeting held on 15 July 2008 lengthy discussions took place on ways and means to enable the EAR membership to overcome their geographic dispersal in order to facilitate “attendance” at EAR meetings. Initial discussion centred on the possibility of tele/videoconferencing and then moved on to the provision of an online “conference” facility [FORUM] as had been suggested earlier by John Maschke. This has now been put into effect; it is not there just for EAR members but for all our members as well as anyone else interested in what we do.

This facility can now be accessed from the link on the website Home page or directly via http://www.ahs.asn.au/phpBB3/index.php - I suggest you place this as a shortcut on your desktop to enable you to access the Forum without having to go via the website.

The Forum is very much in its infancy but can rapidly be expanded as members suggest what subjects/categories they would like to have. Would all members please take the time to at least join the board; then hopefully they will start to contribute.

The board is currently open to ALL and there are not as yet any closed [Members Only] forums; this will help to disseminate our message about hydrography to the wider community. They can be provided later if required.

I have done my bit – you have YOUR board – USE IT!

Mike CALDER – Webmaster [and now Administrator]

We now have our own page in Hydro INTERNATIONAL in the "From the National Societies" section but we need contributions to fill it. We are not talking about "learned discussion" (that belongs in the JOURNAL) but "hydro gossip", news form AHS members - corporate or individual - and even light hearted reminiscences. If you are really good at the latter you might even see it in the "As It Was" section. Send your stuff to our AHS Director of Communications who will collate and send it on to Hydro International.

PROFILE: Venessa O'CONNELL - Director of Communications

Venessa O'Connell (at Sydney Ports) took over in 2006 as Director of Communications for Australasia. In his announcement the President said "Most will be aware that Venessa was a Young Ambassador to the FIG Congress in Munich, and kindly spoke on my behalf when I was unable to make it. Venessa made a brilliant impression with the Europeans, particularly with her views on how to encourage young people to take up the profession of hydrography."

For those who are new to this site and want to know what Venessa does and thinks about Hydrographic Surveying take a look at her recent ABC interview on the ACE DAY JOBS site below; students looking for career information will also find it most interesting.
