November 2011 - User Needs Analysis for Bathymetric Data

The CRC for Spatial Information[1] (CRCSI), in partnership with the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency  (DCCEE), and with the support of the Intergovernmental Committee on Surveying and Mapping (ICSM) and by the Australian Hydrographic Office (AHO), is conducting a user needs analysis for bathymetric data within Australia. The aims of the project are to:

•     Identify the range of applications in which bathymetric data is being employed

•     Understand the specific data requirements of these applications

•     Summarise the features that make such data versatile, multi-use and fit-for-purpose

•     Produce a report documenting the findings of the study

•     Make recommendations for improving future data collection strategies

The project will be conducted between October 2011 and February 2012, with the final report published mid-2012.

Information provided in completing the attached questionnaire will remain confidential and anonymous.  The report will present only a collective analysis of the gathered data. Organisations participating in the survey will be listed in the report unless they elect otherwise when completing the questionnaire.

Thank you in anticipation for contributing to this project.  We look forward to receiving your response.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Dr. Nathan Quadros: nquadros@crcsi.com.au

The questionnaire can be downloaded by clicking here.

[1] The CRCSI is an independent, not-for-profit, research and development centre set up under the Australian CRC Program. The CRCSI conducts user-driven research in emerging areas of spatial information that address issues of national importance. FORUM News Release:

AHS FORUM SUSPENDED

In view of the impending handover to the new Webmaster/Moderator, the AHS website FORUM has been temporarily suspended.

All AHS Members who were previous members of the FORUM will need to RE-REGISTER when the FORUM is reinstated and will be able to do so with their current username and password.

Apologies for the temporary inconvenience..

The FORUM was established as a result of an EAR Meeting, held on 15 July 2008, when lengthy discussions took place on ways and means to enable the EAR membership to overcome their geographic dispersal in order to facilitate “attendance” at EAR meetings. Initial discussion centred on the possibility of tele/videoconferencing and then moved on to the provision of an online “conference” facility [FORUM] as had been suggested earlier by John Maschke. This was put into effect; not just for EAR members but for all our members as well as anyone else interested in what we do.

We now have our own page in Hydro INTERNATIONAL in the "From the National Societies" section but we need contributions to fill it. We are not talking about "learned discussion" (that belongs in the JOURNAL) but "hydro gossip", news form AHS members - corporate or individual - and even light hearted reminiscences. If you are really good at the latter you might even see it in the "As It Was" section. Send your stuff to our AHS Director of Communications who will collate and send it on to Hydro International.

PROFILE: Venessa O'CONNELL - Past Director of Communications

Venessa O'Connell (at Sydney Ports) took over in 2006 as Director of Communications and held the position for the next four years until her retirement from the position for maternity leave. In his announcement of her appointment in 2006 the President said "Most will be aware that Venessa was a Young Ambassador to the FIG Congress in Munich, and kindly spoke on my behalf when I was unable to make it. Venessa made a brilliant impression with the Europeans, particularly with her views on how to encourage young people to take up the profession of hydrography."

For those who are new to this site and want to know what Venessa does and thinks about Hydrographic Surveying take a look at her recent ABC interview on the ACE DAY JOBS site below; students looking for career information will also find it most interesting.
